As we age, we start to shed our selves like dead skin. As we navigate the temporal plane moving towards our singular and shared fate, we grow and we change, we lose the innocence of our childhood and are further marked by love and loss, trial and tribulation. The further along we get, the harder it becomes to recognize the children we see in photographs, these memories of what we were. It becomes more difficult to relate to those moments of abandon see captured in sepia tones and pinned down in albums. The process of sloughing old versions of our selves, the emotional shudder and molt, does not necessarily produce better versions of our selves, newer versions that upgrade the old model. We can shed the little bits of ourselves that constitute the good in us; we have the capacity to lose pieces of ourselves that may have been better held onto.
We can hope that what we become is something better than what we are now, and it’s generally what we struggle for, internally and externally, but it’s a hard swath to mow. The title track from the new album is a funereal march on which a lament is sung. The Baltimore, Maryland duo treads darker waters with their new material, and this song is cut through with mournful imagery and a reckoning of loss, an examination of what we change, what we lose, and what we can’t shake. Vocalist Jenn Wasner lays down the melancholic lines “I don’t need another friend / When most of them / I can barely keep up with them / Perfectly able to hold my own hand / But I still can’t kiss my own neck” like a statement of resignation, laying her flaws bare. Wasner’s voice recalls the sultry depth of Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McVie, and the rhythmic, gothic Americana swing of the song plays up her most plaintive elements.
As the song ramps up in its latter half, multi-tracked guitar lines fall into fitful, jabbing solos swirling around hummed harmonies. Wasner and multi-instrumentalist Andy Stack build “Civilian” from a simple lament into an intense and defiant track upon layers of guitar feedback, sustained organ tones, and the loping, rueful march of the drums. Civilian is slated for a March 8th release courtesy of. 2 Comments For This Post. Dustin Edge Says: loved when the loud guitars came in near the end – really great song.
