Windows 10 Creators Update Installation Failed

The upgrade got to about 30% of the actual update (not sure if it was the drivers step, or before that) and just decided to back out to Windows 7 Pro. That worked ok, but I don't understand why it failed to complete. When I view the update history I see about a dozen failed updates of Windows 10, which I personally didn't trigger, over the past week. The laptop wouldn't have been on for long enough for them to take effect, and I didn't see the process start either. Code C198 is not found when I look for assistance.

In fact, it doesn't even manage to pick up the code correctly. Any suggestions? (I'm a longterm software user, but not techie really). Thanks so much for the prompt reply! You have scared me half to death;-)) I did say that while I've been in software all my career, I'm not really techie!

I think I will just slink quietly away and continue with Windows 7. I retired a couple of years ago, and I think it will do fine for another year or so, particularly if my treasured Vaio is going to become extinct! Its about the 6th one I've had. I hadn't heard they are discontinuing. There was I thinking that for once, I wouldn't need to replace the laptop to get the latest operating system. Thanks again.

That is probably a very good choice for now. Windows 7 users have had the most trouble upgrading. Microsoft's Windows 10 free offer to upgrade is good until July 28, 2016. They have some big changes coming to Windows 10 in Oct or Nov. By then they will have heard about most of difficult upgrade problems and might include fixes so that more Windows 7 users can upgrade. And if you want to try and install it again Microsoft has Windows 10 download website with Media tool that will start upgrade right from there. Have you heard. Sony is advising Vaio owners to delay upgrading to Windows 10. Sony is apparently discontinuing Vaio line so I would think their future support will be minimum. One Windows 7 64-bit user uninstalled his mfg's display adapter (incl software) from device manager. When that step is done Windows 7 OS will revert to Microsoft display adapter. That adapter has lower resolution ability.

He also disabled his antivirus software and disconnected any external devices-like printer. Now from my own experience: When your windows 10 upgrade download reaches 100%, open task mgr and click 'performance' tab. When you can see internet connection shows no activity, disable your internet adapter. Be patient after that. Windows 10 actual install process consists of 3 circles that are doing different parts of install. Your pc will restart several times.

Be sure to have pc plug into electrical outlet during this process. In finishing touches it will ask you if you want to log into internet.skip that. When install is over, you will be asked to log in as local user. Now back to your video. Windows 10 will install HD video adapter as default and it will be much better that Windows 7. Also your internet adapter will be available again. Now you should log into your microsoft user acct as soon as you can and start checking windows update in settings.

Most likely in first batch of updates from Windows you will find driver included for your mfg installed adapter. JMarco - ASUS K55-A laptop i7 3630QM proc, 16gb ram, intel HD 4000 video, 240 gb SSD, a/c 7260 wifi, W10 Home 3rd party sft-Chrome, iTunes, VLC, Adobe Reader, Speccy, Kindle.
